I’m spilling the beans on my one super easy secret to getting the longest hair of my life! Spoiler alert: it includes saving you a ton of time, and every mom’s trusty sidekick – dry shampoo. Because, let’s be real, ain’t nobody got time to wash their hair with a toddler pulling on their leg …..and throwing toys in the toilet (just me?).
The last time I got this many comments on my hair was back in sixth grade when I decided that a poodle-style perm was a good choice. Note: those were not good comments. This boy I liked named Phillip literally said, “You look like a poodle.” Rad.
Fast forward to today, and I’m rocking the absolute longest hair I’ve ever had – and sweet compliments from strangers that still catch me off guard! People tell me, “My hair would never grow that long.” Not true, sister. Here’s the scoop on what worked for me!
Stop washing your hair (as often)
I discovered this not long after I gave birth. As a new mom, I had extremely limited windows of time to actually shower and get myself ready. And every time I’d step foot in the shower, my son would wake up screaming and ready to eat.
I decided to try to minimize my time showering by not washing my hair as often. Today, I try to go one – sometimes even TWO weeks without washing my hair. Imagine all the time I’m saving!
I know, I know. You’re thinking, “TWO weeks without washing my hair?! No way could I do that!” I get it. And it does take some hair training to get it to the point where it’s used to more infrequent washings, so just be patient.
Use dry shampoo before the oil creeps in
To stretch the time between washings as much as possible, I rely (of course) on dry shampoo. But, I don’t use as much as you’d think over a two-week span! The ultimate secret that I tell women is that you have to use dry shampoo BEFORE your hair gets oily. Otherwise, you’re just chasing the problem. Be proactive, not reactive, friends!
What I do is the same day that I wash my hair, I’ll dry and style it like normal. Then, that night before bed, I spray my roots with dry shampoo and give them a good tease to provide an additional barrier to the oil (plus some added volume for the morning!).
I continue to spray a little dry shampoo and tease as needed as the week(s) go on.
Rock a headband/hat to go longer between washes
I’m not going to lie, there is a certain point of no return when my hair just gets unruly and oily. Usually, this happens around the one week mark. So, I’ve invested in some cute, cheap hats (try Kohl’s and Old Navy) to hide the oil for another several days (or week!).
Wait it out
When I started this routine of no-washing and proactive dry shampooing, my hair didn’t just suddenly grow overnight. But, over several months, I started to notice some real growth. And now, strangers are noticing, too!
Here are my current fave dry shampoos (good news, you can buy them all at Target!):
- Batiste Clean & Light Bare dry shampoo (around $6)
- Dove unscented dry shampoo (around $5)
- Coconut Miracle Oil dry shampoo (around $7)
